Profits before public health

Health experts have accused a Conservative council of putting profits before public health after it claimed that sunbeds in council-run sports centres were too lucrative to remove.

New Forest District Council’s leisure panel ruled last week that the funds raised from the authorities eight beds were a valuable source of income and users were aware of the dangers.

‘We have a responsibility to maximise our income and minimise the burden on the ratepayers. It is not the job of the council to tell people how to live their lives,’ said Conservative councillor Alexis McEvoy, who sits on the panel.
