An EHP from Sacramento in California has just completed a fact-finding trip to the UK covering food safety and housing inspections and the death of a zoo keeper mauled by a tiger.

Tammy Derby, a supervising environmental specialist, visited North West Region recently as part of a twinning arrangement established in 1989 between the CIEH North West Region and the California Environmental Health Association (CEHA).

Now in its 28th year, the twinning arrangement is an annual exchange programme whereby a CIEH member of the North-West region attends the annual Educational Symposium in California and a CEHA member attends the North West CPD events in England.

Tammy’s CIEH host, Barrie Whitehead, arranged for her to stay with two different families during the week, in Manchester and Brigsteer in the Lake District.

After a walking tour of Manchester City Centre, she attended a Cheshire Branch World Environmental Health Day training event on September 26. She then joined EHOs from Tameside Borough Council (TMBC) for two days, shadowing food hygiene and housing inspections .

Tammy and Barrie also attended the Lake District Branch Continuing Professional Development event. It included presentations on food crime, obesity, bathing water and the health and safety investigation following the death of zoo keeper, Sarah McClay, who was attacked by a Sumatran tiger at South Lakes Wild Animal Park.

Tammy writes: ‘I’ve been an environmental health specialist for about 27 years and have worked in many programmes- food safety, sanitation, public pools, solid waste disposal, medical waste disposal, housing safety and sanitation, nuisance enforcement and land use/zoning enforcement to name a few.

I am very curious about regulatory programmes in other countries, in terms of what the rules are and consequences exist for violations. This trip was great and I would like to thank the kind colleagues who hosted me.’

Barrie Whitehead adds: ‘North West Region has been privileged to host many outstanding representatives from the Californian Association over the years and many fine relationships and friendships have been forged.’

North West Region is currently inviting applications from members, to attend the 2018 CEHA symposium which will be held in Sacramento from 12  to 15 March.
