Digital wellbeing workplace scheme set up by HSE

An online community aimed at helping businesses improve health and safety at work has been set up by the HSE called Helping Great Britain Work Well.

The launch follows calls earlier this year from trade unions and other health and safety organisations for businesses to focus on a broad range of wellbeing as well as health and safety issues.

More than 100 employees, representing around 300,000 workers, responded, inspiring the HSE to set up the community and encourage individuals and businesses to use the hashtag #HelpGBWorkWell across social media.

The initiative aims to connect businesses and individuals and encourage them to make commitments to improve health and safety, and share ideas, through discussion and debate.

Backing the initiative is the HSE’s already established Helping Great Britain work well strategy www.hse.gov.uk/strategy/ 

HSE chair Martin Temple said: ‘Making a workplace commitment to health and safety is something that takes time, energy and passion, but the rewards for delivering on that commitment are incalculable. 

‘Sensible and proportionate health and safety prevents ill-health, death and injury in the workplace and is good for business and good for workers.’

There is also a Help Great Britain Work Well LinkedIn group for businesses to come together. The HSE ran a Tweet chat on Black Friday - the day it launched the community - to answer questions about the initiative and gather pledges from businesses.

Businesses and individuals discussed ideas around workplace wellbeing and health and safety using hashtag #Commit17.  Issues raised included concerns about victimisation of whistleblowers, technical questions on why wooden ladders were stipulated for use in trenches, queries over gas safety, general tips on health and safety, cycle helmets and more.

One user asked why the HSE won’t take an enforcement action against companies with work place stress problems, when the issue is one of its strategy’s top three priorities.

HSE responded saying the idea is for individuals and businesses to make voluntary commitments to improve work place conditions but added that it could still take enforcement action – presumably where existing action allows.
